Ingredients in Funfetti Cake Frosting

Save yourself a trip to the store for canned frosting, which doesn’t taste near as yummy as homemade anyway. Here’s all you need for homemade funfetti buttercream frosting:

Butter – One cup, or two sticks. I like to use unsalted butter, softened to room temperature, but you could use salted butter too. Powdered sugar – three cups confectioners’ sugar, which is lighter and much finer than regular sugar. It’s always a good idea to sift the sugar as you add it in, for a super fluffy texture. Heavy cream – two to three tablespoons heavy whipping cream give this frosting a gloriously rich, yet light texture and unbelievable flavor. Vanilla extract – one tablespoon of your favorite vanilla extract. If you have clear vanilla, it’ll help keep the icing bright white so the sprinkles can really pop against the white color. Sprinkles – half a cup. I like to use the jimmies (or longer shaped rainbow sprinkles) because they hold their shape better and won’t bleed into the frosting like other sprinkles. Pinch of salt – optional

Steps to Fluffy Funfetti Frosting

Best Ways to use Funfetti Cake Frosting

This recipe makes enough frosting to easily frost a 9×13 cake pan or two 8-inch or 9-inch cake pans. Always use a toothpick to check to see if the cakes are done before taking them out of the oven. Once the cakes have been cooled on a wire rack, you can assemble your cakes. I like to use a knife to add a thin crumb coat on the outside of the cakes by taking a little bit of the frosting and thinning it out with even more milk. That way the outer layer of frosting doesn’t get any cake crumbs in it. This frosting can be piped with only a large piping tip, the smaller one will get blocked with the sprinkles.

Perfect Topper to our Homemade Funfetti Cake Recipe

Check out our absolutely delicious homemade funfetti cake recipe, which tastes better than the boxed cake mix any day! The simple cake batter is made with simple ingredients like large egg whites, cake flour, buttermilk, baking powder, soda, and sour cream. So yummy and easy! They make delicious cupcakes, layered cake or a dripper cake without any of that artificial flavor of the dry ingredients of boxed cake.

Additions and Substitutions for Funfetti Icing

If you prefer cream cheese frosting for your cake or cookie desserts, you can simply add jimmies to our simple cream cheese frosting recipe. Same goes for chocolate! Fold in your favorite sprinkles into our chocolate buttercream frosting for a festive birthday look. For a tangy and luscious icing, add a teaspoon of lemon juice to the frosting and ice it over a regular funfetti cake or a lemon cake. If you want a themed cake, like for a baby shower or holiday, simply add different colors of sprinkles to your icing. For example, blue or pink for a baby shower, green and red for Christmas, black and orange for Halloween, etc. Or add a drop or two of food coloring to the frosting for different colors. Whip using the bowl of a stand mixer on medium speed until the color is the way you like it.

How to Store Funfetti Icing

Once you decorate a cake or cupcakes, the icing will stay good for up to five days at room temperature or in the fridge. For longer storage, refrigerate for up to two weeks or freeze for up to two months. Always remove from the freezer and let the frosting thaw to room temperature. It’s also a good idea to run it through your electric mixer, and re-whip before use.
